The mayor of Almonaster la Real, Jacinto J. Vázquez López, spoke this Tuesday, October 20, in the round table "Mining municipalities: social licence from the local perspective of the sector", within the VI International Mining Exhibition (MMH 2026), held in Seville from October 20 to 22. The meeting took place in the Auditorio Atalaya and was moderated by David Toscano Contreras, president of the Diputación Provincial de Huelva.

Other mining municipalities at the table

Municipal representatives from Aznalcóllar, O Pino, Minas de Riotinto and Valverde del Camino also took part in the debate. According to the Ayuntamiento de Almonaster la Real, taking part in this forum makes it possible to convey the experience of a municipality that lives directly alongside mining activity and to defend that the voice of the territories be present in decisions about the future of the sector. The Consistorio notes that the so-called social licence is a fundamental issue for strengthening the relationship between mining and citizens, improving communication with local communities and ensuring that the needs and concerns of the municipalities are taken into account. Participation in the table is also seen as an opportunity to exchange experiences with other municipalities with a mining tradition and to address the challenges this activity poses for employment, the economy and local development.

An exhibition with a European motto

MMH 2026 is held under the motto "Mining: a strategic pillar for the future of Europe" and brings together institutional representatives and professionals from the sector in Seville. The Ayuntamiento de Almonaster la Real states that with this participation it strengthens its presence in the sector's dialogue spaces and asserts the role of municipalities in any strategy that seeks to reconcile mining activity with the development and well-being of their territories.

To attend

The exhibition is open in Seville until Thursday, October 22. Information on access, opening hours and accreditation is handled by the MMH 2026 organisation.
