The Human Library of the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA) has brought a different way of reading to the 50th edition of the Feria del Libro de Huelva: people who tell their own story instead of books opened by their cover. The activity, held in the plaza de las Monjas, brought together the publicist Anabel Domínguez and the writer May R. Ayamonte, with the RNE journalist Paloma Jara as host.

Stories instead of pages

The human library format proposes listening without judging and learning what lies behind appearances. According to UNIA, the aim is to bring closer realities that often remain invisible and to question stereotypes. The university places this proposal in a social context marked by polarization and individualism, and defends empathy as a starting point for building bonds. Domínguez, author of No soy lo que ves, has said that her approach to literature stems from the desire to help other people go through grief. «In adversity there are also opportunities,» she has stated. Ayamonte, with young adult and adult novels, has claimed literature as a space to address what remains hidden and has argued that «literature is for everyone».

An activity open to all audiences

The director of the Sede de La Rábida, María de la O Barroso, has stressed the open nature of the event, aimed at all audiences. «What we want is for the little ones to understand, for the older ones to understand, that all of us have a little writer inside,» she has indicated. The event is part of UNIA's programme at the Feria del Libro de Huelva, which this year reaches its 50th edition in the plaza de las Monjas.
