Ayamonte asks for extreme caution after a case of West Nile virus is detected in a bird in Costa Esuri
Ayamonte Town Council recommends that the public protect themselves from mosquito bites and eliminate stagnant water in patios, terraces and gardens after a case of West Nile virus has been located in a bird in the Costa Esuri area.
Ayamonte Town Council has asked the public to take extreme measures to avoid mosquito bites and to check their homes and plots so that water does not accumulate. The recommendation comes after a case of West Nile virus has been detected in a bird in the Costa Esuri area.
How to avoid bites
According to the recommendations of the Regional Ministry of the Presidency and Emergencies, it is advisable to turn off lights that are not necessary, because they can attract mosquitoes, and to use mosquito nets on the windows of the rooms where people sleep or keep them closed if none are available.
It is also advised to avoid strong smells, such as perfumes or highly scented soaps, and to wear light-coloured clothing that covers most of the body. For exposed skin, authorised and registered repellents should be used, following the product's instructions.
Check the water at home
The Town Council asks people to avoid areas with stagnant water and to check patios, terraces and gardens every week to eliminate possible accumulations. In water tanks, swimming pools, washing places and fountains, chlorination methods or systems that prevent mosquito access should be used. On livestock farms, it is recommended to frequently renew the water in the animals' drinking troughs.
Treatments in the municipality
Ayamonte Town Council states that it is continuing with mosquito control and prevention treatments in collaboration with the Diputación Provincial de Huelva.
What needs to be done
Prevention is based on two fronts: protecting the body from bites with light-coloured clothing, mosquito nets and authorised repellents, and checking patios, terraces, gardens, swimming pools and fountains every week so that no stagnant water remains.
